California Calligraphy Summit
Opening Reception Sept. 23, 2-4 pm
Fine Arts Building 238, San Francisco State University

--

The California Calligraphy Summit brings together the work of a dozen artists who are now or have been based in California, for whom calligraphy is central to their artistic exploration. Diverse international and culturally complex written languages inform their inventively experimental work, ranging from abstract to literary, classic to "street." Several of the artists are already acclaimed abroad, while others are just beginning to attract art world attention for their exciting approaches. This fascinating and multilingual exhibition shows how some of the best art in California ties to the world. Exhibiting artists are Tauba Auerbach, Chen Chi-kwan, Catherine Courtenaye, Ala Ebtekar, Fu Chuan-fu, Wosene Worke Kosrof, Stella Lai, Isaac Lin, John McKenzie, Kazuaki Tanahashi, Mohamed Zakariya, and Faye Zhang.

Admission is free and open to all ages.

More information on the artists, images, and goodies can be found at www.sfsu.edu/~gallery, and at www.myspace.com/sfsufineartsgallery.

Opening Reception: Sat, Sept 23, 2-4 pm, featuring artist Wosene Worke Kosrof in conversation with curator Lizzetta LeFalle-Collins at 3 pm.

Exhibit runs through October 19.

Call for Works for the 60x60 project

Subject: 60x60 (2006) Call for 60 second silent video shorts

The Following is the Call for 60 second silent video shorts for the 60x60 project in 2006

Vox Novus is inviting video artists to submit silent video shorts 60 seconds or less in length to be included in its fourth annual collaboration with the 60x60 project. 60 videos will be paired with 60 audio tracks from composers selected that year. The screening will include the 60 video shorts paired with the audio shown in succession for one hour.

There will be no pause between the pieces. Works may be less than 60 seconds in length, but may not exceed 60 seconds. Credits will be added to the end of the feature. Video selected that is less than 60 seconds long will be “padded” with neutral frames either before, after, or surrounding the composition. Please note that the total duration of the work including silence may NOT exceed sixty seconds.

Excerpts of larger works are strongly discouraged. 60x60 is a project of “signature works” and short works created specifically for the 60x60 project.

The call is open to artists of any nationality, age, or career stage. Works submitted must not have been previously performed or broadcasted. Submissions must be labeled with the artist's name and the title of the work. The submission form must be sent at the same time with the submitted work. Submission form must contain the artist’s name, address, email, phone number, title, length, and credits on a separate sheet (typed). Biographies and program notes may be included on a separate sheet, but must be typed and each may be no longer than 100 words in length.

Multiple works may be submitted. Each work must be noted on the submission form(s) and clearly indicated. Do Not send originals! No works will be returned, and may be performed in subsequent performances after the debut concert. All submissions must be postmarked by September 15, 2006. Selected works will be announced on December 15, 2006. Submission of the work(s) in DV must be accompanied by the submission form and sent to:

Submissions must include: Submission Form (including bio and program notes) and a labeled CD containing the submission in audio format. Submission forms can be downloaded at http://www.VoxNovus.com/60x60.htm or by written request to Vox Novus

San Francisco, a city known for activism and creativity, will host the emotional and politically charged Simnuke Art Exhibit on July 28th, 7pm to midnight, at Rx Gallery, 132 Eddy Street. Over the last sixty years, people all over the world have struggled with the looming threat of nuclear arms. For the artists exhibiting in the Simnuke Art Exhibit, this struggle expresses itself through artwork that is both stunning and a searing indictment of the nuclear arms race.

The Simnuke Project commemorates and confronts the splitting of the atom using art that ranges the emotional gamut from fear to anger, satire, and above all, a simple wish for peace.

The art of the Simnuke Art Exhibit is as diverse as San Francisco itself. The show, co-curated by Sasha Harris-Cronin and Max Carlson, comprises 20 artists from the United States and Japan: 5 of them invited and 15 of them selected from submitted artworks. The exhibit pieces will range from photography to kinetic sculpture, from humorous statements to deadly serious exposes. In addition, there will be an exhibit of government documents from the Prelinger Library tracing the history of the atomic era in public policy.

As global nuclear proliferation blooms into reality, and the United States moves ahead with so-called tactical "bunker busters" and nuclear arms in space, it is critical that this powerful collection reach an audience. Co-curator Sasha Harris-Cronin stated, "If we can make one person leave the gallery, go home, and write their congressperson, then we have made a difference."
